Pinniped
Os pinnípedos, muitas vezes generalizados como selos, são um clado amplamente distribuído e diversificado de mamíferos marinhos semiaquáticos. Compreendem as famílias existentes Odobenidae, Otariidae e Phocidae. Existem 33 espécies existentes de pinnípedes, e mais de 50 espécies extintas foram descritas a partir de fósseis. Embora os selos fossem historicamente considerados descendentes de duas linhas ancestrales, a evidência molecular os apoia como uma linhagem monofilética. Os pinnípedos pertencem à ordem Carnivora e seus parentes vivos mais próximos são ursos e musteloides. Os selos variam em tamanho desde o selo de Baikal de 1 m e 45 kg até o selo de elefante do sul de 5 m e 3,200 kg, que também é o maior carnivorão. Várias espécies exibem dimorfismo sexual.
