A platina é um elemento químico com o símbolo químico Pt e um número atômico de 78. É um metal de transição denso, maleável, dúctil, altamente não-reativo, precioso e branco-cinzento. Seu nome é derivado do espanhol platina, que é literalmente traduzido em "pouco prata". A platina é um membro do grupo de elementos da platina e do grupo 10 da tabela periódica de elementos. Possui seis isótopos de ocorrência natural. É um dos elementos mais raros na crosta terrestre com uma abundância média de aproximadamente 5 μg / kg. Ocorre em alguns minérios de níquel e cobre, juntamente com alguns depósitos nativos, principalmente na África do Sul, que representa 80% da produção mundial.
