Poligeno
Um poligeno, fator múltiplo, herança de múltiplos genes ou gene quantitativo é um grupo de genes não alélicos que, em conjunto, influenciam uma característica fenotípica. Os loci ou identidades precisas dos genes não alélicos são muitas vezes desconhecidos para os biólogos. Os avanços na metodologia estatística e no seqüenciamento de alto rendimento são, no entanto, permitindo que pesquisadores localizem genes candidatos para a característica. Estes genes também são pleiotrópicos. Os genes que contribuem para a diabetes tipo 2 são pensados para ser principalmente poligênicos. Os traços com determinismo poligênico correspondem aos caracteres quantitativos clássicos, em oposição aos caracteres qualitativos com determinismo monogênico ou oligogênico.
