Polimerase
Uma polimerase é uma enzima que sintetiza polímeros de ácidos nucleicos. A polimerase de DNA e a polimerase de ARN são usadas para montar moléculas de DNA e RNA, respectivamente, copiando uma cadeia de modelo de DNA ou ARN usando interações de emparelhamento de bases. É um acidente de história que as enzimas responsáveis pela geração de outros biopolímeros não são também referidas como polimerases. Por exemplo, o complexo enzimático que reúne aminoácidos em proteínas é denominado ribossoma, em vez de "proteína polimerase". Uma polimerase da bactéria termófila, Thermus aquaticus é utilizada na reação em cadeia da polimerase, uma técnica importante de biologia molecular.
