O pós-estruturalismo é um rótulo formulado pelos acadêmicos americanos para denotar as obras heterogêneas de uma série de filósofos franceses e continentais do meio do século XX e teóricos críticos que chegaram a proeminência internacional nos anos 60 e 70. Um tema importante do pós-estruturalismo é a instabilidade nas ciências humanas, devido à complexidade dos próprios seres humanos e à impossibilidade de escapar completamente das estruturas para estudá-los. O pós-estruturalismo é uma resposta ao estruturalismo. O estruturalismo é um movimento intelectual desenvolvido na Europa desde o início até o meio do século XX. Argumentou que a cultura humana pode ser entendida por meio de uma estrutura modelada na linguagem - que difere da realidade concreta e das idéias abstratas - uma "terceira ordem" que medeia entre as duas. Os autores pós-estruturalistas apresentam críticas diferentes do estruturalismo, mas os temas comuns incluem a rejeição da auto-suficiência das estruturas que o estruturalismo postula e uma interrogação das oposições binárias que constituem essas estruturas.
