Predação
Na ecologia, a predação é uma interação biológica onde um predador se alimenta de sua presa. Os predadores podem ou não matar suas presas antes de se alimentar delas, mas o ato de predação geralmente resulta na morte de sua presa e na eventual absorção do tecido da presa através do consumo. Outras categorias de consumo são herbivoria, micofagia e detritiva, o consumo de material orgânico morto. Todas essas categorias de consumo se enquadram na rubrica de sistemas de recursos para o consumidor. Muitas vezes, é difícil separar vários tipos de comportamentos alimentares. Por exemplo, algumas espécies parasitas se alimentam de um organismo hospedeiro e, em seguida, coloque seus ovos sobre ele para a sua prole para alimentá-lo enquanto ele continua a viver ou em seu cadáver em decomposição depois que ele morreu. Entretanto, a principal característica da predação é o impacto direto do predador sobre a população de presas. Por outro lado, os detritivores simplesmente comem material orgânico morto decorrentes da decadência de indivíduos mortos e não têm impacto direto no organismo "doador". As pressões seletivas impostas umas às outras geralmente levam a uma corrida armamentista evolutiva entre presas e predadores, resultando em várias adaptações antipredator.
