Em economia, o valor presente, também conhecido como valor atualizado presente, é uma quantia futura de dinheiro que foi descontada para refletir seu valor atual, como se existisse hoje. O valor presente é sempre menor ou igual ao valor futuro porque o dinheiro tem potencial de ganhos de interesse, uma característica referida como o valor do tempo do dinheiro. O valor do tempo pode ser descrito com a frase simplificada: "Um dólar hoje vale mais do que um dólar amanhã". Aqui, "vale mais" significa que seu valor é maior. Um dólar hoje vale mais do que um dólar amanhã porque o dólar pode ser investido e ganhar um dia de interesse, tornando o total acumulado em um valor superior a um dólar até amanhã. O interesse pode ser comparado ao aluguel.
