Prophase
Prophase, do grego antigo πρό e φάσις, é um estágio de mitose em que a cromatina se condensa em duas estruturas em forma de haste chamadas cromossomos em que a cromatina se torna visível. Este processo, chamado de condensação de cromatina, está envolvido com o complexo de condensina. Uma vez que o material genético foi replicado na interfase prévia do ciclo celular, existem duas cópias idênticas de cada cromossomo na célula. Essas cópias são chamadas de cromátides irmãs e estão unidas um ao outro em um elemento de DNA presente em cada cromossomo chamado Centromere. Também durante a profase, a coloração com giemsa pode ser aplicada para provocar a banda G nos cromossomos. Um órgão importante na mitose é o centrosoma, o centro organizador de microtúbulos em metazoários. Durante a profase, os dois centrosomas, que se replicam independentemente da mitose, aumentaram sua atividade de microtúbulos devido ao recrutamento de γ-tubulina. Os centrosomas serão afastados para as extremidades opostas do núcleo celular pela ação de motores moleculares que atuam sobre os microtúbulos. Basicamente, a cromatina no núcleo serpenteia em cromossomos.
