Auxotrofia
Auxotrofia é a incapacidade de um organismo para sintetizar um composto orgânico particular necessário para o seu crescimento. Um auxotrofo é um organismo que exibe essa característica; Auxotrophic é o adjetivo correspondente. Auxotrofia é o oposto da prototrofia, caracterizada pela capacidade de sintetizar todos os compostos necessários para o crescimento. O método de revestimento de réplicas implementado por Esther Lederberg incluiu auxotrofes que eram sensíveis à temperatura; ou seja, a sua capacidade de sintetizar dependia da temperatura. Múltiplos auxótrofos também podem coexistir ao mesmo tempo, dentro do mesmo organismo. Na genética, uma cepa é dita auxotrófica se carrega uma mutação que a torna incapaz de sintetizar um composto essencial. Por exemplo, um mutante de levedura com um gene de via de síntese de uracilo inactivado é um auxotrole de uracilo. Essa tensão não é capaz de sintetizar o uracilo e só poderá crescer se o uracilo puder ser absorvido pelo meio ambiente. Este é o oposto de um protótropo de uracile, ou neste caso uma cepa de tipo selvagem, que ainda pode crescer na ausência de uracile.
