Claudius Ptolomeu era um escritor greco-egípcio de Alexandria, conhecido como matemático, astrônomo, geógrafo, astrólogo e poeta de um único epigrama na antologia grega. Ele morava na cidade de Alexandria na província romana do Egito, escreveu em grego e realizava a cidadania romana. Além disso, poucos detalhes confiáveis de sua vida são conhecidos. Seu lugar de nascimento foi dado como Ptolemais Hermiou na Thebaid em uma declaração não corroborada pelo astrônomo do século 14 Theodore Meliteniotes.
