Os puritanos eram um grupo de protestantes ingleses nos séculos XVI e XVII, incluindo, entre outros, calvinistas ingleses. O puritanismo nesse sentido foi fundado por alguns exilados marianos do clero pouco depois da adesão de Elizabeth I da Inglaterra em 1558, como movimento ativista dentro da Igreja da Inglaterra.
