Decaimento radioativo
A decomposição radioativa, também conhecida como decadência nuclear ou radioatividade, é o processo pelo qual um núcleo de um átomo instável perde energia através da emissão de radiação ionizante. Um material que emite espontaneamente esse tipo de radiação - que inclui a emissão de partículas alfa, partículas beta e raios gama - é considerado radioativo. A decomposição radioativa é um processo estocástico ao nível de átomos únicos, na medida em que, de acordo com a teoria quântica, é impossível prever quando um átomo particular irá decair. No entanto, a chance de um determinado átomo se deteriorar é constante ao longo do tempo. Para um grande número de átomos, a taxa de decaimento para a coleta é calculável a partir das constantes de decaimento medidas dos nuclídeos. Existem muitos tipos diferentes de decaimento radioativo. Uma decadência ou perda de energia resulta quando um átomo com um tipo de núcleo, chamado radionuclídeo pai, se transforma em um átomo com um núcleo em um estado diferente ou em um núcleo diferente contendo diferentes números de prótons e nêutrons. Qualquer um desses produtos é chamado de nuclídeo filha.
