Um gerador de números aleatórios é um dispositivo computacional ou físico projetado para gerar uma seqüência de números ou símbolos que não possuem nenhum padrão, ou seja, aparecem aleatoriamente. As muitas aplicações de aleatoriedade levaram ao desenvolvimento de vários métodos diferentes para gerar dados aleatórios. Muitas delas existiram desde a antiguidade, incluindo dados, lançamentos de moedas, baralhamento de cartas, uso de talos de milho no I Ching e muitas outras técnicas. Devido à natureza mecânica dessas técnicas, gerar um grande número de números suficientemente aleatórios exigiu muito trabalho e / ou tempo. Assim, os resultados às vezes são coletados e distribuídos como tabelas de números aleatórios. Hoje em dia, após o advento de geradores de números aleatórios computacionais, um número crescente de loterias geridas pelo governo e jogos de loteria, estão usando RNGs em vez de métodos de desenho mais tradicionais. Os RNGs também são usados hoje para determinar as probabilidades de máquinas caça-níqueis modernas. Vários métodos computacionais para geração de números aleatórios existem.
