Uma regência era uma jurisdição territorial na velha lei escocesa que só poderia ser criada pelo rei, ao conceder terras a um sujeito no direito liberal e também à terra sobre a qual tal direito se estendia. Um senhor da regência tinha uma jurisdição civil igual à do xerife do rei e uma jurisdição penal mais ampla, equivalente à do Tribunal Superior de Justiça. Uma regência era uma jurisdição superior para uma baronha, e poderia ser exercida sobre os barônios dentro da regalia. A jurisdição foi exercida pelo tribunal de regência, geralmente presidido pelo bailie ou seu deputado, e composto pelos pretendentes de tribunal, que detinham terras por processo judicial. Inicialmente, as regalias faziam parte do sistema de governo, jurisdição delegada, mas, a partir do século XIV, os senhores da regência freqüentemente procuraram usurpar a autoridade real e estabelecer domínios semi-independentes. Mas no século quinze, as regalias voltaram a ser um meio de governar por autoridade delegada. Regilidades e jurisdições de regência foram abolidas pela Heritable Jurisdictions Act 1746.
