A identificação por radiofrequência é o uso sem fio sem contato de campos eletromagnéticos de radiofreqüência para transferir dados, com o objetivo de identificar e rastrear automaticamente as tags anexadas aos objetos. As etiquetas contêm informações armazenadas eletronicamente. Algumas tags são alimentadas e lidas em intervalos curtos através de campos magnéticos. Outros usam uma fonte de energia local, como uma bateria, ou então não têm bateria, mas coletam energia do campo EM de interrogação, e então atuam como um transponder passivo para emitir micro ondas ou ondas de rádio UHF. As tags alimentadas por bateria podem operar em centenas de metros. Ao contrário de um código de barras, a etiqueta não precisa necessariamente estar dentro da linha de visão do leitor e pode ser incorporada no objeto rastreado. A identificação por radiofrequência faz parte da família das tecnologias de identificação automática e captura de dados que inclui códigos de barras 1D e 2D. RFID usa um chip eletrônico, geralmente aplicado a um substrato para formar um rótulo, que é afixado a um produto, caso, palete ou outro pacote. As informações contidas podem ser lidas, gravadas ou reescritas. As tags RFID são usadas em muitas indústrias.
