Samos
Samos é uma ilha grega no mar do Egeu oriental, ao sul de Chios, ao norte de Patmos e do Dodecaneso, e ao largo da costa da Ásia Menor, a partir da qual é separada pelo estreito Mycale de 1,6 km. É também uma unidade regional separada da região do norte do mar Egeu e o único município da unidade regional. Nos tempos antigos, Samos era uma cidade-estado particularmente rica e poderosa, particularmente conhecida por suas vinhas e produção de vinho. É o lar de Pythagoreion e da Heraion de Samos, um Património Mundial da UNESCO que inclui o aqueduto eupalino, uma maravilha de engenharia antiga. Samos é o lugar de nascimento do filósofo e matemático grego Pythagoras, a quem o nome do teorema de Pitágoras, o filósofo Epicuro e o astrônomo Aristarco de Samos, o primeiro indivíduo conhecido a propor que a Terra gira em torno do sol. O vinho sami era bem conhecido na antiguidade, e ainda é produzido na ilha. A ilha foi governada pelo principado semi-autônomo de Samos sob a soberania otomana desde 1835 até se juntar à Grécia em 1912.
