Cochliomyia
Cochliomyia é um gênero na família Calliphoridae, conhecido como mosquitos, na ordem Diptera. Cochliomyia é comumente referido como a mosca de gatilho do Novo Mundo. Existem quatro espécies neste gênero: Cochliomyia macellaria, Cochliomyia hominivorax, Cochliomyia aldrichi e Cochliomyia minima. As duas espécies principais são Cochliomyia hominivorax e Cochliomyia macellaria. Cochliomyia hominivorax são conhecidos como o galo silvestre primário porque suas larvas produzem miíase e se alimentam de tecidos vivos. Esta alimentação provoca lesões profundas e de bolso na pele, o que pode ser muito prejudicial para o hospedeiro animal. Cochliomyia macellaria é conhecida como o gumeador secundário porque suas larvas produzem miíase, mas se alimentam apenas de tecido necrótico. Esta espécie é forçosamente importante, porque muitas vezes é associada a cadáveres e carcaças. Ambos, C. hominivorax e C. macellaria prosperam em áreas quentes e tropicais.
