Serótipo
Serótipo ou serovar refere-se a variações distintas dentro de uma espécie de bactéria ou vírus ou entre células imunes de diferentes indivíduos. Esses microorganismos, vírus ou células são classificados em conjunto com base em seus antígenos de superfície celular, permitindo a classificação epidemiológica dos organismos ao nível das subespécies. Um grupo de serovares com antígenos comuns é chamado de serogrupo. A serotipagem muitas vezes desempenha um papel essencial na determinação de espécies e subespécies. O gênero Salmonella de bactérias, por exemplo, foi determinado a ter mais de 4400 sorotipos, incluindo Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, S. enterica serovar Typhi e S. enterica serovar Dublin. Vibrio cholerae, a espécie de bactéria que causa cólera, tem mais de 200 sorotipos, com base em antígenos celulares. Apenas dois deles foram observados para produzir a enterotoxina potente que resulta em cólera: 0: 1 e 0: 139. Os serótipos foram descobertos pela microbiologia americana Rebecca Lancefield em 1933.
