A economia de serviços pode se referir a um ou a dois dos desenvolvimentos econômicos recentes: ▪ A crescente importância do setor de serviços nas economias industrializadas. A lista atual das empresas Fortune 500 contém mais empresas de serviços e menos fabricantes do que nas décadas anteriores. ▪ A importância relativa do serviço em uma oferta de produtos. A economia de serviços nos países em desenvolvimento é principalmente concentrada em serviços financeiros, hospitalidade, varejo, saúde, serviços humanos, tecnologia da informação e educação. Atualmente, os produtos possuem um componente de serviço mais alto do que nas décadas anteriores. Na literatura de gestão, isto é referido como a servitização de produtos. Praticamente todos os produtos hoje possuem um componente de serviço. A antiga dicotomia entre produto e serviço foi substituída por um continuum serviço-produto. Muitos produtos estão sendo transformados em serviços. Por exemplo, a IBM trata seus negócios como um negócio de serviços. Embora ainda fabrique computadores, ele vê os bens físicos como uma pequena parte da indústria de "soluções empresariais". Eles descobriram que a elasticidade-preço da demanda por "soluções de negócios" é muito menor do que para o hardware.
