Retificador controlado por silício
Um retificador controlado por silício é um dispositivo de controle de corrente de estado sólido de quatro camadas. O nome "retificador controlado por silício" é o nome comercial da General Electric para um tipo de tiristor. O SCR foi desenvolvido por uma equipe de engenheiros de energia liderada por Gordon Hall e comercializada por Frank W. "Bill" Gutzwiller em 1957. Algumas fontes definem retificadores controlados por silício e tiristores como sinônimo, outras fontes definem retificadores controlados por silício como um subconjunto de um maior família de dispositivos com pelo menos quatro camadas de material alternativo de tipo N e P, toda essa família sendo referida como tiristores. De acordo com Bill Gutzwiller, os termos "SCR" e "Retificador Controlado" foram anteriores, e "Thyristor" foi aplicado mais tarde à medida que o uso do dispositivo se espalhou internacionalmente. Os SCRs são dispositivos unidirecionais em oposição aos TRIACs que são bidirecionais. Os SCRs podem ser acionados normalmente apenas por correntes que entram no portão em oposição aos TRIACs que podem ser acionados normalmente por uma corrente positiva ou negativa aplicada ao eletrodo de sua porta.
