O efeito da pele é a tendência de uma corrente elétrica alternada para se distribuir dentro de um condutor, de modo que a densidade de corrente seja maior perto da superfície do condutor e diminua com maiores profundidades no condutor. A corrente elétrica flui principalmente na "pele" do condutor, entre a superfície externa e um nível chamado de profundidade da pele. O efeito da pele faz com que a resistência efetiva do condutor aumente em freqüências mais altas, onde a profundidade da pele é menor, reduzindo assim a seção transversal efetiva do condutor. O efeito da pele é devido a correntes de Foucault opostas induzidas pelo campo magnético de mudança resultante da corrente alternada. A 60 Hz em cobre, a profundidade da pele é de cerca de 8,5 mm. Em altas freqüências, a profundidade da pele torna-se muito menor. O aumento da resistência à CA devido ao efeito da pele pode ser mitigado com o uso de fios de tecidos especiais. Como o interior de um grande condutor carrega tão pouco da corrente, os condutores tubulares, como o tubo, podem ser usados para economizar peso e custo.
