A física do estado sólido é o estudo de matéria rígida, ou sólidos, através de métodos como mecânica quântica, cristalografia, eletromagnetismo e metalurgia. É o maior ramo da física da matéria condensada. A física de estado sólido estuda como as propriedades em larga escala de materiais sólidos resultam de suas propriedades de escala atômica. Assim, a física do estado sólido constitui a base teórica da ciência dos materiais. Também possui aplicações diretas, por exemplo na tecnologia de transistores e semicondutores.
