É membro da autoridade regional da Renânia. Solingen é chamada de "Cidade das Lâminas", uma vez que tem sido conhecida pela fabricação de espadas finas, facas, tesouras e máquinas de barbear feitas por empresas famosas como Dreiturm, DOVO Solingen, Wüsthof, JA Henckels, Böker, Klauberg, Eickhorn- Solingen e muitos outros fabricantes. As operações alemãs de Wilkinson também são baseadas aqui. Nos tempos medievais, os espadachins de Solingen cunharam a imagem da cidade, que é preservada até essa data.
