A palavra spastic é usada de forma diferente, dependendo da localização geográfica de seu uso e da versão da língua inglesa em uso lá, o que levou a alguma controvérsia e mal entendido sobre a natureza e adequação da palavra. Derivado através do latim dos spastikos gregos, a palavra em sua raiz ainda se refere a uma alteração no tônus muscular afetada pela espasticidade da condição médica, que é observada na diplegia espástica e muitas outras formas de paralisia cerebral e também em termos como "cólon espástico ".
