Na biologia, uma esporo é uma unidade de reprodução assexuada que pode ser adaptada para dispersão e para a sobrevivência, muitas vezes por longos períodos de tempo, em condições desfavoráveis. Em contrapartida, os gametas são unidades de reprodução sexual. Os esporos fazem parte dos ciclos de vida de muitas plantas, algas, fungos e protozoários. Nas bactérias, os esporos não fazem parte de um ciclo sexual, mas são estruturas resistentes usadas para sobrevivência em condições desfavoráveis. Os esporos são geralmente haplóides e unicelulares e são produzidos pela meiose no esporângio de um esporófito diplóide. Em condições favoráveis, o esporo pode se transformar em um novo organismo usando a divisão mitótica, produzindo um gametófito multicelular, que eventualmente passa a produzir gametas. Dois gametos se fundem para formar um cigoto que se desenvolve em um novo esporófito. Este ciclo é conhecido como alternância de gerações. Os esporos de plantas de semente, no entanto, são produzidos internamente e os megaspores, formados nos óvulos e os microsporos, estão envolvidos na formação de estruturas mais complexas que formam as unidades de dispersão, as sementes e os grãos de pólen.
