Os macacos esquilo são os macacos do mundo novo do gênero Saimiri. Eles são o único gênero na subfamília Saimirinae. O nome do gênero Saimiri é de origem Tupi, e também foi usado como um nome em inglês pelos primeiros pesquisadores. Os macacos esquilo vivem nas florestas tropicais da América Central e do Sul na camada do dossel. A maioria das espécies tem intervalos parapatricos ou alopátricos na Amazônia, enquanto S. oerstedii é encontrado disjuntamente na Costa Rica e no Panamá. O macaco comum é capturado para o comércio de animais de estimação e para pesquisa médica, mas não está ameaçado. Duas espécies de macacos de esquilo estão ameaçadas: o macaco de esquilo de América Central e o macaco de esquilo preto são listados como vulneráveis pela UICN.
