O QUE SIGNIFICA STELLARATOR EM INGLÊS
Stellarator
Um stellarator é um dispositivo usado para confinar um plasma quente com campos magnéticos para sustentar uma reação de fusão nuclear controlada. É um dos primeiros dispositivos de fusão controlada, primeiro inventado por Lyman Spitzer em 1950 e construído no ano seguinte, o que mais tarde se tornou o Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory. O nome refere-se à possibilidade de aproveitar a fonte de energia do sol, um objeto estelar. Stellarators eram populares nos anos 50 e 60, mas os resultados muito melhores dos projetos do tokamak levaram-nos a cair de favor na década de 1970. Mais recentemente, na década de 1990, os problemas com o conceito tokamak levaram a um renovado interesse pelo design do stellarator e vários novos dispositivos foram criados. Alguns importantes experimentos de stellarator modernos são o Wendelstein 7-X, na Alemanha, o Helically Symmetric Experiment nos EUA e o Large Helical Device, no Japão.
