Fórmula estrutural
A fórmula estrutural de um composto químico é uma representação gráfica da estrutura molecular, mostrando como os átomos estão dispostos. A ligação química dentro da molécula também é mostrada, explicitamente ou implicitamente. Também são utilizados vários outros formatos, como em bancos de dados químicos, como SMILES, InChI e CML. Ao contrário das fórmulas químicas ou nomes químicos, as fórmulas estruturais fornecem uma representação da estrutura molecular. Os químicos quase sempre descrevem uma reação ou síntese química usando fórmulas estruturais em vez de nomes químicos, pois as fórmulas estruturais permitem que o químico visualize as moléculas e as mudanças que ocorrem. Muitos compostos químicos existem em diferentes formas isoméricas, que possuem estruturas diferentes, mas a mesma fórmula química geral. Uma fórmula estrutural indica os arranjos dos átomos de uma maneira que uma fórmula química não pode.
