Telúrio
O telurio é um elemento químico com o símbolo Te e o número atômico 52. Um metalóide quebradiço, levemente tóxico, raro, prata-branco, que parece semelhante ao estanho, o telúrio é quimicamente relacionado ao selênio e ao enxofre. É ocasionalmente encontrado na forma nativa, como cristais elementares. O telurio é muito mais comum no universo como um todo do que na Terra. Sua extrema raridade na crosta terrestre, comparável à da platina, é em parte devido ao seu alto número atômico, mas também devido à formação de um hidreto volátil que faz com que o elemento seja perdido no espaço como gás durante a formação nebulosa quente do planeta. Tellurium foi descoberto no Império austro-húngaro, em 1782 por Franz-Joseph Müller von Reichenstein em um mineral contendo telúrio e ouro. Martin Heinrich Klaproth nomeou o novo elemento em 1798 após a palavra latina para "terra", tellus. Os minerais de telureto de ouro são os compostos de ouro natural mais notáveis. No entanto, eles não são uma fonte comercialmente significativa de próprio telúrio, que normalmente é extraído como subproduto da produção de cobre e chumbo.
