Talidomida
A talidomida é uma droga imunomoduladora e o protótipo da classe da talidomida de drogas. Foi comercializado pela primeira vez em 1957 na Alemanha Ocidental sob o nome comercial Contergan. A farmacêutica alemã Chemie Grünenthal desenvolveu e vendeu a droga. Principalmente prescrito como sedativo ou hipnótico, a talidomida também afirmou curar "ansiedade, insônia, gastrite e tensão". Posteriormente, foi usado contra náuseas e para aliviar a doença da manhã em mulheres grávidas. A talidomida tornou-se uma droga sem receita médica na Alemanha em outubro 1, 1957. Pouco depois da venda do medicamento, na Alemanha, entre 5.000 e 7.000 crianças nasceram com malformação dos membros, apenas 40% dessas crianças sobreviveram. Em todo o mundo, foram relatados cerca de 10.000 casos de bebês com focomelia devido a Talidomida, apenas 50% dos 10 000 sobreviveram. Aqueles submetidos à talidomida enquanto no útero experimentavam deficiências nos membros de forma que os membros longos não eram desenvolvidos ou se apresentavam como copos.
