Emissão termionica
A emissão termiônica é o fluxo induzido pelo calor de transportadores de carga a partir de uma superfície ou sobre uma barreira potencial de energia. Isso ocorre porque a energia térmica fornecida ao transportador supera o potencial de ligação, também conhecido como função de trabalho, do metal. Os portadores de carga podem ser elétrons ou íons, e em literatura mais antiga às vezes são chamados de "termões". Após a emissão, uma carga que é igual em magnitude e oposto em sinal para a carga total emitida é inicialmente deixada para trás na região emissora. Mas se o emissor estiver conectado a uma bateria, a carga deixada para trás é neutralizada pela carga fornecida pela bateria à medida que os portadores de carga emitidos se afastam do emissor e, finalmente, o emissor estará no mesmo estado que antes da emissão. O exemplo clássico de emissão termiônica é a emissão de elétrons de um cátodo quente em vácuo em um tubo de vácuo. O cátodo quente pode ser um filamento metálico, um filamento metálico revestido ou uma estrutura separada de metal ou carbonetos ou boretos de metais de transição. A emissão de vácuo de metais tende a tornar-se significativa apenas para temperaturas acima de 1000 K.
