Reflexão interna total
A reflexão interna total é um fenômeno que ocorre quando uma onda de propagação atinge um limite médio em um ângulo maior do que um ângulo crítico particular em relação ao normal para a superfície. Se o índice de refracção for menor no outro lado do limite e o ângulo de incidência for maior do que o ângulo crítico, a onda não pode passar e é totalmente refletida. O ângulo crítico é o ângulo de incidência acima do qual a reflectância interna total ocorre. Isto é particularmente comum como um fenômeno óptico, onde ondas de luz estão envolvidas, mas ocorre com vários tipos de ondas, como ondas eletromagnéticas em geral ou ondas sonoras. Quando uma onda cruza um limite entre diferentes materiais com diferentes tipos de índices de refração, a onda será parcialmente refratada na superfície do limite e parcialmente refletida. No entanto, se o ângulo de incidência for maior do que o ângulo crítico - o ângulo de incidência em que a luz é refratada de forma que viaja ao longo do limite - então a onda não atravessará o limite e, em vez disso, será totalmente refletida de volta internamente.
