Potência celular
A potência celular é a capacidade de uma célula se diferenciar em outros tipos de células. Quanto mais tipos de célula uma célula pode se diferenciar, maior a sua potência. A potência também é descrita como o potencial de ativação de genes dentro de uma célula que, como um continuum, começa com totipotência para designar uma célula com maior potencial de diferenciação, pluripotência, multipotência, oligopotência e, finalmente, unipotência. A potência é tirada do termo latino "potens", que significa "ter poder". As células-tronco embrionárias pluripotentes originam-se como células de massa interna dentro de um blastocisto. Essas células estaminais podem se tornar qualquer tecido no corpo, excluindo uma placenta. Somente as células do morula são totipotentes, capazes de se tornar todos os tecidos e uma placenta.
