Tricromacia
O tricromato ou o tricromismo é a condição de possuir três canais independentes para transmitir informações coloridas, derivadas dos três diferentes tipos de cone. Os organismos com tricromacia são chamados de tricromas. A explicação normal do tricromisso é que a retina do organismo contém três tipos de receptores de cor com diferentes espectros de absorção. Na realidade, o número desses tipos de receptores pode ser superior a três, uma vez que diferentes tipos podem ser ativos em diferentes intensidades de luz. Em vertebrados com três tipos de células de cone, com poucas intensidades de luz, as células da haste podem contribuir para a visão de cor.
