Condicionamento clássico
O condicionamento clássico é um tipo de aprendizagem que ocorre quando um estímulo condicionado é emparelhado com um estímulo incondicionado. Normalmente, o CS é um estímulo neutro, os EUA são biologicamente potentes e a resposta incondicionada aos EUA é uma resposta reflexa não aprendida. Depois de repetir o emparelhamento, o organismo exibe uma resposta condicionada ao CS quando o CS é apresentado sozinho. O CR é geralmente semelhante ao UR, mas ao contrário do UR, ele deve ser adquirido através da experiência e é relativamente impermanente. O condicionamento clássico difere do condicionamento operante ou instrumental, no qual um comportamento é fortalecido ou enfraquecido, dependendo das suas consequências. Uma experiência clássica de Pavlov exemplifica o procedimento padrão usado no condicionamento clássico. O primeiro Pavlov observou a UR produzida quando o pó de carne foi colocado na boca do cão. Ele então tocou um sino antes de dar o pó de carne. Depois de algumas repetições deste alinhamento de sino e carne, o cão salivou apenas o sino, demonstrando o que Pavlov chamou de resposta "condicional", agora comumente denominada "resposta condicionada" ou CR. No condicionamento, o CS não está simplesmente conectado à UR.
