Uraninite
Uraninite é um mineral rica em urânio e minerais com uma composição química que é em grande parte UO2, mas devido à oxidação, o mineral geralmente contém U3O8 variável. Além disso, devido à decomposição do urânio, contém óxidos de chumbo e vestígios de hélio. Também pode conter tório e elementos das terras raras. É mais comumente conhecido como pitchblende. O mineral é conhecido pelo menos desde o século 15 a partir de minas de prata nas Montanhas Ore, na fronteira alemão / checa. A localidade tipo é a cidade de Jáchymov, no lado checo das montanhas, onde F.E.Brückmann descreveu o mineral em 1772. Pitchblende do depósito Johanngeorgenstadt na Alemanha foi usado por M. Klaproth em 1789 para descobrir o elemento urânio. Todos os minerais de uraninite contêm uma pequena quantidade de rádio como um produto de decaimento radioativo de urânio. Uraninite também contém sempre pequenas quantidades de isótopos de chumbo 206Pb e 207Pb, os produtos finais da série de decaimento dos isótopos de urânio 238U e 235U respectivamente. Pequenas quantidades de hélio também estão presentes na uraninite como resultado da decomposição alfa.
