Ventilador médico
Um ventilador médico é uma máquina projetada para mover mecanicamente ar respirável para dentro e para fora dos pulmões, para fornecer o mecanismo de respiração para um paciente que é fisicamente incapaz de respirar ou respirando insuficientemente. Enquanto os ventiladores modernos são máquinas computadorizadas, os pacientes podem ser ventilados com uma máscara de válvula de bolsa, uma máquina manual simples. Após o furacão Katrina, funcionários dedicados "ensacados" em hospitais de Nova Orleans por dias com unidades de válvula de bolsa simples anexadas a tubos endotraqueais, um sistema de "ventilador" que pode ser usado sem limite de tempo definido. Os ventiladores são utilizados principalmente em medicina de cuidados intensivos, cuidados domiciliários e medicina de emergência e em anestesia.
