O verificacionismo era um movimento na filosofia ocidental - em particular, a filosofia analítica - que surgiu na década de 1920 pelos esforços de um grupo de filósofos conhecidos como positivistas lógicos, que visavam formular critérios para assegurar a significância das declarações filosóficas e avaliar objetivamente a sua falsidade ou verdade. Inicialmente, os positivistas lógicos buscaram uma linguagem universal em que tanto a linguagem e a física comuns - assim todas as ciências empíricas - pudessem ser representadas formalmente através dos axiomas da lógica simbólica, após o que a base das ciências empíricas na observação ou experiência poderia ser claramente discernida e imitada pela filosofia. O princípio da verificabilidade dos positivistas lógicos - que apenas as declarações sobre o mundo que são empiricamente verificáveis ou logicamente necessárias são cognitivamente significativas - lançam teologia, metafísica e julgamentos avaliativos, como a ética e a estética, como "pseudo-estatísticas cognitivas sem sentido", que eram emocionalmente significativos. Os pressupostos fundamentais do programa verificatório apresentaram formulações variadas, que evoluíram entre os anos 1920 e 1950 para o empirismo lógico da versão mais suave.
