Niqqud
Na ortografia hebraica, niqqud ou nikkud é um sistema de sinais diacríticos usados para representar vogais ou distinguir entre pronúncias alternativas de letras do alfabeto hebraico. Vários desses sistemas diacríticos foram desenvolvidos na Alta Idade Média. O sistema mais difundido, e o único ainda utilizado até hoje, foi criado pelos Masoretes de Tiberias na segunda metade do primeiro milênio CE na Terra de Israel. O texto escrito com niqqud é chamado ktiv menuqad. As marcas de Niqqud são pequenas em comparação com as consoantes, para que possam ser adicionadas sem retranscrever textos cujos escritores não as antecipam. Na ortografia israelense moderna, niqqud raramente é usado, exceto em textos especializados, como dicionários, poesia ou textos para crianças ou para novos imigrantes. Para fins de desambiguação, um sistema de ortografia sem niqqud, conhecido em hebraico como ktiv machh desenvolveu. Isso foi formalmente padronizado nas Regras de Ortografia sem Niqqud promulgadas pela Academia da Língua Hebraica em 1996.
