Ghats ocidentais
Os Ghats Ocidentais são uma serra que corre quase paralela à costa ocidental da península indiana. É um Património Mundial da UNESCO e é um dos oito "pontos quentes mais quentes" da diversidade biológica no mundo. Às vezes é chamado de Grande Escarpment da Índia. A faixa corre de norte a sul ao longo da borda ocidental do platô de Deccan, e separa o planalto de uma planície costeira estreita, chamada Konkan, ao longo do mar da Arábia. Um total de trinta e nove propriedades, incluindo parques nacionais, santuários de vida selvagem e florestas de reserva foram designados como patrimônio mundial - vinte em Kerala, dez em Karnataka, cinco em Tamil Nadu e quatro em Maharashtra. O intervalo começa perto da fronteira de Gujarat e Maharashtra, ao sul do rio Tapti, e corre aproximadamente 1.600 km através dos estados de Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu e Kerala terminando em Kanyakumari, na ponta sul da Índia. Essas colinas cobrem 160 mil km2 e formam a área de captação para sistemas complexos de drenagem ribeirinha que drenam quase 40% da Índia. Os Ghats Ocidentais bloqueiam as chuvas para o Planalto Deccan. A elevação média é de cerca de 1.200 m.
