Cristalografia de raios-X
A cristalografia de raios-X é uma ferramenta usada para identificar a estrutura atômica e molecular de um cristal, em que os átomos cristalinos causam um raio de raios X incidentes para difractar em muitas direções específicas. Ao medir os ângulos e as intensidades desses feixes difratados, um cristalógrafo pode produzir uma imagem tridimensional da densidade de elétrons dentro do cristal. A partir desta densidade eletrônica, as posições médias dos átomos no cristal podem ser determinadas, bem como suas ligações químicas, sua desordem e várias outras informações. Uma vez que muitos materiais podem formar cristais - como sais, metais, minerais, semicondutores, bem como várias moléculas inorgânicas, orgânicas e biológicas - a cristalografia de raios-X tem sido fundamental no desenvolvimento de muitos campos científicos. Em suas primeiras décadas de uso, este método determinou o tamanho dos átomos, os comprimentos e tipos de ligações químicas e as diferenças de escala atômica entre vários materiais, especialmente minerais e ligas. O método também revelou a estrutura e a função de muitas moléculas biológicas, incluindo vitaminas, drogas, proteínas e ácidos nucleicos, como o DNA.
