Yunnan é uma província da República Popular da China, localizada no extremo sudoeste do país. Abrange aproximadamente 394 mil quilômetros quadrados e tem uma população de 45,7 milhões. A capital da província é Kunming, anteriormente conhecida como Yunnan. A província faz fronteira com o Vietnã, Laos e Burma. Yunnan está situado em uma área montanhosa, com elevadas elevações no noroeste e baixas elevações no sudeste. A maioria da população vive na parte leste da província. No oeste, a altitude pode variar desde os picos das montanhas até os vales dos rios até 3.000 metros. Yunnan é rico em recursos naturais e tem a maior diversidade de vida vegetal na China. Nanzhao era multi-étnico, mas a elite provavelmente falava um dialeto do norte de Yi.
