Zona de fusão
A fusão da zona é um grupo de métodos semelhantes de cristais de purificação, em que uma região estreita de um cristal é fundida e esta zona fundida é movida ao longo do cristal. A região derretida derrete sólido impuro na sua borda dianteira e deixa uma esteira de material mais puro solidificado atrás dele, enquanto se desloca através do lingote. As impurezas se concentram na massa fundida e são movidas para uma extremidade do lingote. A refinação de zona foi desenvolvida por William Gardner Pfann em Bell Labs como um método para preparar materiais de alta pureza para transistores de fabricação. Seu uso inicial foi em germânio para este propósito, mas pode ser estendido para praticamente qualquer sistema soluto-solvente com uma diferença de concentração apreciável entre as fases sólida e líquida em equilíbrio. Este processo também é conhecido como o processo de zona de flutuação, particularmente no processamento de materiais semicondutores.
