Quando a diferença de potencial elétrico entre o interior e o exterior da célula é observada por um método como um eletrodo de célula despolarizante, o interior da película que não está excitado é eletricamente negativo quando comparado com o exterior. Em outras palavras, a membrana celular está polarizada eletricamente no seu lado externo. Esta diferença de potencial é referida como um potencial estacionário ou um potencial de membrana (potencial de membrana). Assim, quando a corrente flui para fora (através da membrana celular), a magnitude do potencial estacionário diminui. A redução do potencial estacionário é uma redução da diferença de potencial no filme, que é um processo no qual a polarização do filme desaparece e esse fenômeno é chamado de despolarização. Geralmente, a causa da despolarização é chamada de despolarização e o potencial de ação é uma despolarização em um sentido amplo. 탈분극 세포내 전극 등의 방법으로 세포내외의 전위차(電位差)를 보면, 흥분하고 있지 않은 막(膜)의 내측은 외측에 비하여 전기적으로 부(負)이다. 즉 세포막은 외측이 전기적으로 정(正)으로 분극하고 있다. 이 전위차를 정지전위 또는 막전위(膜電位)라고 한다. 그래서 세포막을 가로질러 전류를 외향(外向)으로 흘리면 정지전위의 크기는 감소한다. 정지전위의 감소는 막에 있는 전위차의 감소로서, 막의 분극이 소실하여 가는 과정임으로, 이 현상을 탈분극(脫分極)이라고 한다. 일반적으로는 어떠한 원인이건, 정지전위가 감소하는 것을 탈분극이라고 하며, 활동전위도 넓은 의미의 탈분극이다.
