Konsep 'Mahu Menolong Diri Sendiri'yang sering dilaungkan oleh Dato' Onn Jaafar menjadi asas untuk memainkan peranannya. Usaha menyediakan kemudahan infrastruktur pembangunan luar bandar seperti membina jalan raya, jambatan sekolah, pusat kesihatan, balai raya, bekalan air bersih dan lain-lain kemudahan secara gotong royong digerakkan untuk meningkatkan tahap kehidupan rakyat. Namun begitu, peranan yang dijalankan oleh RIDA adalah agak terbatas dan perbincangan tentang masalah sosio ekonomi orang-orang Melayu menjadi antara isu di Kongres Ekonomi Bumiputera Pertama pada 5-7 Jun 1965.
