Dacor., IV, 668, de la o rădăcină *
rac de origine onomatopeică ca
orac în
orăcăi. Această explicație se potrivește pentru primul sens; dar al doilea pare că presupune în sursa expresivă un al doilea sens, de „grosolănie, obiect necizelat”, care apare și în unele cuvinte înrudite, dintre cele ce urmează.

lat. raccanus, din
raccāre „a răcni” (Pușcariu,
Dacor., III, 687-9; REW 7019; Candrea),
cf. it. raganello „brotac”, sau din
rac „cancer” (Scriban) este îndoielnică.
