Astroturfingul este practica de mascare a sponsorilor unui mesaj sau a unei organizații pentru a face ca aceasta să pară ca și cum ar proveni și este susținută de participanții la nivel local. Este o practică menită să ofere declarațiilor sau organizațiilor mai multă credibilitate prin reținerea informațiilor despre conexiunea financiară a sursei. Termenul astroturfing este o derivare a lui AstroTurf, un brand de covor sintetic conceput pentru a arata ca iarba naturala, o piesa despre cuvântul "grassroots". Implicația din spatele utilizării termenului este că nu există nici un sprijin "adevărat" sau "natural", ci mai degrabă un sprijin "fals" sau "artificial", deși unii operatori astroturfing susțin practica. Pe Internet, astroturferii folosesc software pentru a-și masca identitatea. Uneori, un individ operează peste multe persoane pentru a da impresia de sprijin larg pe agenda clienților lor.
