Limbile austroaziatice
Limbile Austroasiatice, în clasificările recente, sinonime cu Mon-Khmer, sunt o familie de limbi mari din Asia de Sud-Est continentală, de asemenea împrăștiate în India, Bangladesh și granița sudică a Chinei. Numele Austroasiatic vine de la cuvintele latine pentru "sud" și "Asia", deci "Asia de Sud". Printre aceste limbi, doar Khmer, Vietnamese și Mon au o istorie înregistrată de mult timp, iar doar vietnamezii și khmerii au statut oficial. Celelalte limbi sunt vorbite de grupuri minoritare. Etnologul identifică 168 de limbi austroasiatice. Acestea formează treisprezece familii stabilite, care în mod tradițional au fost grupate în două, cum ar fi Mon-Khmer și Munda. Cu toate acestea, o clasificare recentă prezintă trei grupuri, în timp ce altul a abandonat Mon-Khmer ca un taxon în totalitate, făcându-l sinonim cu familia mai mare. Limbile austroasiatice au o distribuție disjunctă în India, Bangladesh și Asia de Sud-Est, separate de regiuni în care se vorbește alte limbi.
