Balcani
Peninsula Balcanică, denumită în mod popular Balcanii, este o regiune geografică a Europei de Sud-Est. Regiunea își ia numele din Munții Balcani, care se întinde de la estul Bulgariei până la estul Serbiei. Regiunea este locuită preponderent de bulgari, croați, bosniaci, gorani, macedoneni, muntenegreni, sârbi, sloveni, români, aromani, greci, albanezi, turci și alte grupuri etnice care prezintă minorități în anumite țări, cum ar fi romani și ashkali. Cea mai mare religie din Balcani este creștinismul ortodox, urmat de creștinismul catolic și islam. Suprafața totală a Balcanilor este de 257.400 de kilometri pătrați, iar populația este de 59.297.000. Balcanii întâlnesc Marea Adriatică în nord-vest, Marea Ionică pe sud-vest, Marea Mediterană și Marea Egee la sud și sud-est, și Marea Neagră la est și nord-est. Cel mai înalt punct din Balcani este Muntele Musala de 2.925 de metri pe malul Rila din Bulgaria. Balcanii au fost populați încă din paleolitic și reprezintă calea prin care agricultura din Orientul Mijlociu sa răspândit în Europa în timpul neolitic.
