Benchmarking-ul este procesul de comparare a proceselor de afaceri și a măsurătorilor de performanță cu cele mai bune practici din domeniu sau cu cele mai bune practici din alte industrii. Dimensiunile măsurate de obicei sunt calitatea, timpul și costul. În procesul de benchmarking cu cele mai bune practici, managementul identifică cele mai bune firme din industria lor sau într-o altă industrie unde există procese similare și compară rezultatele și procesele celor studiate cu propriile rezultate și procese. În acest fel, ei învață cât de bine îndeplinesc obiectivele și, mai important, procesele de afaceri care explică de ce aceste firme au succes. Benchmarking-ul este folosit pentru a măsura performanța utilizând un indicator specific care are ca rezultat o metrică de performanță care este apoi comparată cu altele. De asemenea, se face referire și la "Benchmarking de bune practici" sau la "benchmarking proces", acest proces fiind utilizat în management și în special în management strategic, în care organizațiile evaluează diferite aspecte ale proceselor lor în raport cu procesele companiilor celor mai bune practici, în scopul comparării.
